What are Leaf Agents?
Leaf Agents are an optional component of UpdateEXPERT Premium feature pack / install patches solution that perform all of the local functions required to manage a machine. Leaf Agents run as the local system account on the local machine. Therefore, they have full rights to perform administrative tasks. Leaf Agents communicate with the Master Agent via a secure TCP/IP connection. Leaf agents are recommended when a target machine is locked-down and RPC is not a viable solution for remote management. Target machines may be isolated behind a firewall and you may want to use a more secured method of managing patch levels.
The leaf agent will assist you in getting through the firewall using a port designated by you via secured TCP/IP. Finally, you may want to employ a distributed method for managing many machines. Leaf agents relieve the burden of remote management by placing some of the workload on the locally installed Leaf Agents.
Leaf Agents can be installed remotely using the File/Agent/Install Wizard menu item. For machines that cannot be accessed remotely, the Agent Installer can be run locally on the Leaf Agent machine from the product CD.
During the Leaf Agent installation, you must establish a TCP/IP connection from the machine running the Master Agent to the machine that will run the Leaf Agent and vice versa. This is not an issue if the machines are on the same Local Area Network. However, if there is a firewall between the two machines, it must be configured to allow that connection to be established on the TCP/IP port that you use for UpdateEXPERT Premium Agent communication. This connection is used to register the Leaf Agent with the Master Agent. During this registration, encryption keys are exchanged and recorded for use in the secure communications.
