Patch Management Software / Service Pack

Managing Machines in a Disconnected Network

The Packaged Updates feature for UpdateEXPERT Premium patch management software, supports managing machines that are in an isolated and disconnected network (i.e. not connected to the Internet or otherwise orphaned). The Packaged Updates feature is not enabled by default; to enable it, you must contact our Technical Support department. Once activated by the UpdateEXPERT Premium host, the UpdateEXPERT Premium patch management software installation located in the disconnected network will be able to obtain the latest database of patch information and component updates.

To manage machines in a disconnected network, follow these steps.
  1. The UpdateEXPERT Premium Console and Master Agent must be installed on machines that are in the disconnected network. Install these components using the UpdateEXPERT Premium installation media. Install UpdateEXPERT Premium on a machine that is connected to the Internet. Now you have two installations of UpdateEXPERT Premium patch management software.
  2. From the disconnected network’s installation of UpdateEXPERT Premium, you must run the program "PUP.EXE" located in the installation directory of UpdateEXPERT Premium patch management software. This program will collect information about the build number of the Master Agent and other pertinent information. You can write down the information displayed or use the file created by "PUP.EXE" for the next step.
  3. To perform this function, an installation of UpdateEXPERT Premium must reside on a machine that has Internet connectivity. From that connected machine, you will run the program "PUP.EXE." This program will use the information collected from step #2. Alternatively, you can type the required information. With this information, UpdateEXPERT Premium service pack / patch management software knows what database and program updates you require. You will be prompted for the location where you want these updates to be saved.
  4. Go back to the disconnected network and run "PUP.EXE" again. Take the updates you saved from step #3 with you. You will tell "PUP.EXE" where to find these updates (probably on portable media, like, a CD-R). "PUP.EXE" will update the Master Agent (and all components connected to it). This completes the update process for the metadatabase and other component updates.
  5. The patches you plan to deploy in the disconnected network must be transferred to a machine where the Master Agent is installed (or you can locate the patches from portable media). These patches can be copied from a Microsoft TechNet CD by using the "locate" feature
